I'm a Gaelic Celt - it's pretty obvious just by looking at me. My Mum's side is Irish possibly with Norman heritage. My Dad's side is Anglo-Saxon, I think with some Irish and Jew thrown in.

I'm English though. Not up for negotiation.

Weren't the Huguenots the reason why France led the world in glass production, as well as being artisans in other fields?

Iirc, the King of France offered them a bounty to come back about fifty years after the religious persecution which caused them to leave. I don't think there were many takers.

Mother's side Shetland, going bact to early 1700s when Surmaes were fixed as family names rather than son of etc so a mix of picts and norwegian. also German, a lad from Hamburg jumped ship in 1715 also in Shetland, also Scots blood goingback to William the bruce. Fathers side disappears into the east end in the middle of the 1800s along with Welsh, Irish and Thanet area of Kent.

Danish on my top line and my bottom one. The rest English eventually (some more directly and immediately so.) Definitely some Norman in there: a direct line to the Tyrell that was the suspected regicide of William Rufus, and his grandfather came with the Conqueror. King John is my 25th great grandfather through that line as well.

Other lines get lost (so far) in the East End end in the 19th century. There is a Jones line in there, so maybe Welsh eventually but the romantic family story (with no proof) is that it was pseudonym.
The ones that get lost are all pretty common names - Ford, Clarke, Durrant, Houghton, Stephens,Terry. So like most I would guess a mix of Norman. Anglo-Saxon and Gaelic.

Cressall seems the most unique but it gets lost in a seeming story of a fallen woman some and a late marriage that obscures the kids surname.

Thinking about doing the DNA thing, when I have a lot of money to burn.

Direct matriarchal link on my father's side back to Bordeaux, France.

Pity we couldn't have ended up down there, instead of the shitpot that is now the UK.

No worries - two months down there this Summer *dons shades and spits pistachio husks into corner*

But then I wouldn't have the pleasure of following the wildly successful Hammers...

Have been tracing my family. Nearly all from Covent Garden, the City, Marylebone for the last 200 years. Sometimes an outsider would appear but they usually came from villages outside London like Hampton in Middlesex or Great Sampford in Essex.

The only exception was my great grandfather who was born in Paris in 1870. His parents were born in Poland.

Of my 8 great grandparents 6 had typical English names of Anglo-Saxon origin, 1 Polish, 1 Norman.

The Norman name is my surname. I have been back to see the ancestral home - a ruined castle in Normandy. All people with my surname probably come from this family. I haven't been able to trace a direct line to Normandy but have traced back the line to North Essex in the 14th Century.

A lot of bollocks on here about the Normans. By the time of William the Viking invaders of Northern France were pretty well assimiated. The solders would have intermarried with French women especailly the Nobles. Hence they adopted the language. If you are of Norman decent you probaly 75% of it is French.
